The Responsibility of the Black Church

May 13th, 2008 by Natonia Trammell @ 10:11 am

 By Natonia Trammell

Many would argue that the church is the heart of the black community. Even most people that do not attend church in their adulthood have some childhood memory of being bought to church by a mother, grandmother, or auntie. The biblical principles taught through the church serve as the moral foundation for many Black men and women in America today. But what exactly is the Black church’s role in the community, and do enough black churches embrace this role?

At a watch night service I attended on New Years Eve, one of the ministers spoke to the difference of “ministry” vs. “mission”. “Ministry” she stated, “is what is done within the church, mission is what we do for others outside of the church. This is our great commission”. Giving back to the community spiritually, physically, and emotionally is the great commission of the church, but do enough Black Christians give back in this manner?

I went on a mission trip once to North Africa, and I can remember having a very enlightening conversation with a Sudanese young lady who was Muslim, and she said to me “I could never accept your Jesus. Would you like to know why?” I asked “why?” Her response was, “because every missionary that I have ever met has been white. You are the only black one. Your Jesus is for white people” she continued, “He was not made for us.”

Her comments really made me think about Black Christians’ visibility in the community, both locally and globally. Do we really do enough? And not just with spreading the gospel but also in other areas of mission work as well. Does the Black Christian community practice enough “practical” aide and education? Are we educating our young women on the benefits of sexual abstinence instead of expecting them to remain abstinent until they are married just “because we said so?” Are we being mentors to our young men and having REAL conversations with them about the consequences of reckless behavior and encouraging them to do well in school?

Is the perception of the black Christian community that we are too scared of topics such as AIDS, teenage pregnancy, drugs, prison, and molestation and incest? If so, what are the steps that can be taken to correct this? Is it even the role of the church, to address those issues anyway?

Personally I believe that it is both the responsibility of the church and the community to reclaim our streets and our children. However being a Christian, I think mission work is a fundamental responsibility of the church and mission work encompasses more than just going overseas and proselytizing. True mission work is about the everyday local influences that we have on the community and things we do for the community. Mission work can be as simple as being a mentor to youth in our neighborhoods, or doing prison ministry.   It is about being sick and tired of being sick and tired of talking to our sons through glass windows, and seeing our daughters’ anonymous butt cheeks spread wide in the camera lens of some degrading music video and making conscious efforts to change those things.

The “Is It Just Me?” Game

May 12th, 2008 by The Daily Mocha @ 6:42 am

Feel free to answer the questions or add your own!

Is it just me or…

Is it just me or…do you sometimes wonder who the heck voted Kwame Kilpatrick for mayor…and by the way, doesn’t he look like he’s swallowing Michigan money…literally?

Is it just me or…do Obama haters need to just take a long walk, around the park, after dark, find a spot, to spark conversation–as well as sit their @$$es down?

Is it just me or…does Obama’s apparent winner status, coupled with the audacity of a Clinton V.P. suggestion, not remind you of the time when that black guy, Randall Pinkett won "The Apprentice," and Donald was trying to "split" his win with his white female runner-up contestant?

Is it just me or…are Lil Wayne’s "Lollipop," "Shooter," and "Pop Bottles," songs not just a tad bit catchy?

Is it just me or…does the notion of being "down low" not sound kind of messed up, when you really think about it?

Is it just me or…does the Internet make magazines seem like unnecessary clutter? (just saying)

Is it just me or…is EVERYBODY and they mama getting married?…Deeeamn!

Is it just me or…did Serena step up her hair and makeup game? And has her beau, Common, not been fine for a minute now? (just saying)

Is it just me or…does Jay-Z’s "99 Problems" song just summarize every bit of wackness you’ve ever had to go through with, not a "bitch" in the sense of having a ___, but a ___ having no gosh-darn sense???

Sports & Stuff - 2007-2008 NBA MVP

May 12th, 2008 by Damion Sincere @ 6:00 am

After being arguably the best player in the league and on the planet for the past few years, Kobe Bean Bryant finally got his first regular season NBA MVP award in his 12th year and it’s about time. He can finally be removed from the list of great players that never won this award. As good as Kobe is I wonder if he will come anywhere close to the 5 regular season MVP awards garnered by Michael Jordan or the all-time leader in regular season MVP awards, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who earned 6 total, 3 each with Milwaukee and the Lakers. I guess only time will tell.

Save for Dad, and, By Default, Spouse: Is There A Man Greater?

Obamamania sweeps the Hill

Rep. Robert A. Brady (D-Pa.) was driving toward Washington on Thursday morning when he got a call from Barack Obama. Brady asked Obama where he was, and the man fast approaching ‘presumptive nominee’ status told him he was in the Senate.

Brady had an idea: Obama should pop on over to the House chamber and say hello. And that’s just what the Illinois senator did.

When he walked onto the floor, said Brady, Obama made straight for the Pennsylvania corner. “See, Bob,” he said. “I listen to you sometimes.”

“You got to listen to me all the time,” Brady, an uncommitted superdelegate, said he joked in response.

Brady’s casual suggestion turned into quite a scene, as Obamamania — fueled by Tuesday night’s results in Indiana and North Carolina — descended onto the floor of the House in full force.

As Obama made his way slowly through the House mob, reporters piled up outside the nearest door to the House floor, craning their necks to get a look. Security guards pressed through the media crowd, repeatedly asking the Fourth Estate to keep a lane open for lawmakers.

Supporters and opponents alike maneuvered to get face time, whether it was 73-year-old Rep. James L. Oberstar (D-Minn.) patiently waiting his turn or Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (D-Fla.), a Clinton supporter, giving Obama a big hug.

Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) had the man autograph today’s copy of the NY Daily News. (Cover: "It’s his Party.") Reps. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.), a Clinton backer, and Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) gave him bear hugs on the floor, as well.

Even Republicans were star-struck. Rep. Illeana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said she was escorting a group of elementary school students onto the House floor when Obama made his entrance.

Ros-Lehtinen said the children noticed the presidential hopeful and screamed, “It’s Barack Obama!” in unison. The congresswoman then led the students across the aisle and over to Obama, who chatted briefly with the three students.

“The kids were very excited,” said Ros-Lehtinen. “Like rock star excited.”

Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), an Obama supporter, said that a number of Republicans crossed the aisle to congratulate him. “One told me that if he wins, he looks forward to working with him,” said Conyers, who would not give the member’s name. “I’ve worked with [the congressman] before on some things, but that still surprised me.”

Conyers suggested that Obama’s primary opponent needs to repeat the cross-chamber journey. “Hillary’s got to come now,” he said.

Twice, it looked like Obama was about to leave the chamber, but he got pulled back in by superdelegates — both committed and uncommitted.

Obama himself, apparently mindful of his shadow, bowed before House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.).

Obama’s core constituency — young voters — was fully represented, too, though most of the pages in the chamber won’t be voting until 2012. But they made their opinion clear.

Obama posed for photos with giddy pages on the staircase leading up to the House gallery. The normally staid and deferential pages, who walk the halls quietly on their best behavior, returned the favor, giving Obama a rousing ovation. Security guards reprimanded reporters and tourists for snapping photos with their phones — something that is strictly forbidden in many parts of the chamber unless you are a credentialed photographer — but to little avail.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) arrived after Obama and said she was not sure who had invited him. "I don’t know if he was invited by members," Pelosi said. The visit to the speaker’s chamber, however, didn’t sway her from her officially uncommitted position, she said. "Me, I like combat," Pelosi said. "The best training for campaigning is campaigning."

Not all Republicans, though, were thrilled to see him. Asked if he crossed the aisle to meet Obama, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), shook his head. “Lord no,” he said. “Lord no.”

And Obamamania can have consequences for one’s day job. The Senate voted a few minutes after Obama’s victory lap through the House, but Obama was nowhere to be found. He skipped a Senate roll call vote on a budget point of order on a flood insurance bill.

John Bresnahan, Martin Kady II, Patrick O’Connor, Amie Parnes and Daniel W. Reilly contributed to this story. This story has been corrected.

Mocha Song of the Day (Slash Commentary)

May 8th, 2008 by The Daily Mocha @ 12:42 am

Even as a young buck, I have consistently met and formed relationships with people who are either in, or attracted to, the media. Eventually, I figured I’d add journalism to my repertoire…one thing kinda led to another, and I now pay my dues working for television. I have to say that the more I learn about this industry, meeting all sorts of characters, the more I learn about life.

TV is teaching me that those about whom we form sketchy impressions on screen can, in reality, be the most wonderful people we’ll ever know. (For example, I ran into a Republican strategist yesterday, who I observed briefly, and realized he was kind…and kind of awesome). I also met a Dem supporter who I felt lukewarm about, until his defense of Obama one night…and what do you know? Instant wonderfulness.

Coversely, those who we may know in the real world, can get on television or in smaller realms, projecting images of themselves that they HOPE others will believe is true, and we discover later they are not at all what they seem. For these folks, we dedicate one of the most underrated songs in the history of womankind. The song is called "Golden Boys," by Res…but try to understand the "golden" part of the song in the most ironic of senses.

Lyrics

WHY are you selling dreams of who you wish you could be?
A prince in all of the magazines?
They’d have no words for the man I’ve seen
Talk real fast ‘fore they see your face

And would they love you if they knew all the things we know?
We’ve got these images
We need them to be true
Not ready to believe we’re no more insecure than you

But then there’re girls like me who sit appalled by what we’ve seen
We know the truth about you
Now you’re the prince of all the magazines
That is a dangerous thing
But would they love you if they knew all the things that we know?

Those Golden Boys
All a fraud don’t believe their show
Would they love you if they knew all the things that we know?

Golden Boy, life ain’t a video

Place you in these robes and tell you you’re the greatest man
And you believe and play your cards
Got dealt a winning hand
Don’t you get tired of the show?????????????
The kissin’ ass of all the people that you wanna know
When I was young I thought you had it won
I saw you on T.V. you made life look fun
But then years go by and people grow
I realize it’s all a freak show

Girls like me don’t need no bubblin’ mindstate thrown in my face
The way you goin’ ain’t gonna be no stroll in the sunshine
Can’t turn it back now baby you gone and past that line
So give it on up now
What you gonna do
